Main Street Welcomes A New Businesss Membership - CFVC!

CFVC - member as of 8.01.16

The Canton Main Street Program would like to thank the Cherokee Family Violence Center for graciously becoming a member of the Main Street Program!  By joining us with a Business Level Membership, the CFVC has made it clear that they believe in a beautiful and successful historic town center.  The funding from the membership program helps Main Street offer façade grants to owners of historic buildings, advertising for Shop Small efforts, and the production of fun and family friendly events in town.

The Cherokee Family Violence Center (CFVC) is a domestic violence center in Canton, Georgia. CFVC has been providing assistance to victims of domestic violence and stalking since 1986. CFVC continues to address the mission to enhance the safety of victims of intimate partner violence and their children by providing a 12-bed emergency shelter, offering crisis intervention services through both English and Spanish 4 crisis lines, operating a 72-unit housing complex, providing legal advocacy, case management and multicultural programs, age-appropriate children programs, support groups and individual counseling, and by developing community partnerships and institutional awareness of domestic violence.

We want to thank the CFVC for their contribution to Main Street Program as well as the community as a whole.  The work they do for victims of domestic violence is never ceasing and quite often life saving.  If you or someone you know is in a domestic violence situation, call the CFVC office at770-479-1804, or call one of the two crisis hotlines:For English 770-479-1703,En Español: 770-720-7050.

If YOU would like to become a member of the Main Street Program, please see HERE for a downloadable form (see bottom of the page).

Downtown Canton now has it's very own POKEMAP!

It took me a little bit, but I finally finished a Downtown Canton Pokemon GO map! If you love the game, come to downtown (in the day) and check out all of the PokeStops and Gyms here! And while you are hunting Pokemon you can browse the shops, grab lunch, or even power up with a coffee (Cup Up Coffee is a Gym)!
PS - It is hard to read in this screen grab, but at the bottom it asks in fine print that those hunting Pokemon in the cemetery be mindful and please respect the graves and gravestones. Thank you.

Main Street says Goodbye to a Good Friend

Today I learned that a lovely woman and fantastic volunteer of the Main Street Program has passed away.

Ms. Charlotte Taylor left this world for a better one on July 7th, 2016.  She was truly a shining personality and had a helpful heart that the Main Street Program will miss greatly.  Ms Taylor loved this town and made it a mission to help better it in any way that she could.  It was Ms Taylor who introduced Main Street to the idea of the 2015 First Friday Best Dressed Table Contest.  She loved First Fridays and could often been seen smiling in the crowd.  She knew the good that this program strives to create and she helped us greatly by actively fundraising on our behalf.  She secured sponsorships for us from several Canton businesses, most notably a sizable sum from Northside Hospital.  She even worked with the local Home Depot to get a grill donated to us for a fundraiser or giveaway.

Good volunteers are not easy to come by.  Good friends can be even harder to find.  Ms Taylor was easily both.  She was always ready to help us and we continue to consider her a friend to this Program and this city.  You will be missed dearly, Ms Taylor.  May the Lord keep you forever and always.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by her husband; Richard "Rick" Taylor, sons; Howard Randall Ellison, David Brian Ellison, James Kevin Ellison, daughters; Candy Shannon Wigner, Lindsey Taylor, mother; Margaret Coker, brothers; Barry Lewis Coker, James Coker, Jr., sister; Kathy Clarke, and 12 grandchildren; Ava Ellison, Rhett Ellison, Macayla Ellison, Haylee Ellison, Cassie Ellison, Kaylin Wigner, Jordan Wigner, Amber Wigner, Tyler Wigner, Matt Ellison, Breanna Ellison, Christian Ellison and 1 great grandchild.

Coffee With A Cop is back! July 30th!

Coffee with a Cop july 2016

First Friday is THIS week!

This July 1st is the BEACH THEME First Friday!

We will have beach balls, a net (beach ball volleyball, anyone?), FREE yoga, a bounce house, and more! We will be handing out leis for adults and sunglasses for kids (while supplies last). This is going to be a fun evening in downtown so don't miss it!

For those of you curious about our band, Kid Brothers Band, please check out their site for sample tunes (www.kidbrothers.com).

Beach is always a great theme in the summer. It's hot and so many of us WISH we could be sitting in the sand somewhere. Where a beach cannot be had, the theme creates a substitute that makes us smile nonetheless.

This three day weekend is meant to be a relaxing and celebratory one. What is more relaxing then a cold drink and an outdoor concert?

We encourage people to wear their Hawaiian shirts and flips!

Event is 6pm-9pm

Parking is available all around town, but large lots can be found:

*Behind the marble courthouse
*The corner of Academy St. and Archer Street
*The corner of Archer Street and W. Marietta

So What Did YOU Miss On June 18th? :)

It can be scary to try something new. There is no precedent to gather expectations. You just sort of push through and hope for the best. Sometimes it works out for you, sometimes it doesn’t.

An example of a new idea turned “Flop”: the Valentine’s Day skating rink. It’s ok…We can laugh about it now.

An example of a new idea turned “Success”: June’s Concert in Brown Park presented by Canton Main Street!

On June 18th of 2016 the Canton Main Street Program brought you a concert in Brown Park with Thomas Fountain as the headlining artist. The Main Street Program had never thrown a concert in Brown Park prior to this and, at least for me – the Director of the Program – the worry was there. What if people can’t find the new location? What if the word doesn’t get out? What if the public is not interested in another concert in town? There were so many “What Ifs” and no way to really anticipate the outcome. But FEAR is really just an acronym for Face Everything And Rise. So that is what we did.

When Thomas Fountain approached me in February about bringing a concert to town it sounded like a possible fun addition to the 2016 event schedule. The Main Street Board of Directors agreed and immediately went into planning mode. We could do it in Cannon Park…but then how would that be any different from a First Friday concert? Could it go in a city park like Heritage or Etowah?   No, we are a downtown Canton supporter and anything we do needs to be for the benefit of the downtown businesses. Well, what about Brown Park?   Hmmm…it’s a good size. Not so big that if the crowd is smaller it would feel empty. Not so small that if we do well we will run out of space. Yes, this was the perfect place for this event!

I worked personally with Mr. Fountain to try to develop a show that both the city and the Thomas Fountain team could be proud of. We tossed around the idea of an opener to start the show.   I reached out to Damien Mancini, owner of the Snug Gastro Pub, for advice on a local band. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of going to the Snug after dinner hours Thursday through Saturday, you may not know that The Snug is the downtown hot spot for live music entertainment. Shaun Foti of the Foti Brothers Band immediately came to his mind. He sent me a video clip of Shaun playing at The Snug and I shared it with Thomas. Intrigued, he personally went down to The Snug to see Shaun play and decided that The Foti Brothers would be a good fit. I reached out to book them the very next day.

Then Thomas mentioned he had been a judge at the most recent Cherokee’s Got Talent competition and that winners had been a pair of very talented young ladies from Woodstock High School. I looked up their names, Katelyn Nacon and April Schlinkert, and reached out to their principle. I asked the principle to make contact with the girls and their guardians to see if they’d be interested in showcasing their talent at our show. Before too long, I had an email from April’s father saying the girls would be honored to be involved in our Thomas Fountain concert. All of our 1st choice acts were signed up!

Next we needed food and drink! We didn’t know what the event’s attendance would be, so in an effort to ensure profitability for the vendors we decided to limit them to less than 10. We found that Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ and Manderian House II Chinese were interested in selling meals. Cloud 9 Kettle Corn and a cotton candy vendor signed up for great snacking options. As for beer…well of course we had our own Stout’s Growlers! Couldn’t get a babysitter? Not a problem with this event! It was set to be 100% family-friendly, with a bounce house and face painter to boot! I boosted the Facebook ad, put info and ads in the local periodicals, and even had directional yard signs printed to be place at every turn leading to the event (from exits 16b, 19, and 20). We were as ready as we could be!

Then the day came. The stage was set and the bands began to arrive for sound check. Then, at about 5pm, my nerves started to subside…people were already showing up to reserve their spots on the lawn! It was a sign that this was going to be a good night. And it was. At 6:30pm the girls took the stage and dazzled with their charming personalities and immense talent. They played several song creations where they merged two totally separate songs into one to create a whole new song. Very clever! At 7pm The Foti Brothers rocked us with their own Backyard Alternative Country Blues. 90% of the material they played was their own! The uniqueness was something to be admired.

Then at 8pm, the headliner we had all been waiting for, Thomas Fountain took the stage. He played for roughly and hour and half to many adoring fans that had come a long way to see him at Brown Park. Thomas has the support of many local fans who adore him and he made it very clear that night that his love for his fans is mutual. He played a kickin’ show that was met with cheer and calls for an “Encore!”

When the night came to a close, it was clear that it had been a good time all around. We brought in new people from all over the county and we showed them what a great little town we have here. We love this town and we have fun here. That was the goal all along. Maybe we didn’t break downtown with the massive hordes of people flooding in from all directions…but we didn’t need to. Enough of you showed up to support the bands, support the program, and support the cause. We thank you.
